Sandakphu Trek – The Beginners Choice

Overview :

Sandakphu is a wonderland for the trekkers. It’s located at an altitude of 11,929ft (i.e. 3,636 meters) in Darjeeling district and on the north west of Darjeeling hill town. This is the summit or the highest point in Singalila range, and is also the highest peak in the state of West Bengal, India. The trek to Sandakphu goes all along the Singalila range.

So, why do you think the trekkers from all over the world are so fanatic about Sandakphu and Singalila trek? The answer is simple…. Where else can you see four of the five highest peaks of the world including Mt. Everest, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Lhotse, along with Three Sisters and many other peaks of Nepal, Sikkim, Tibet and Bhutan in one single stretch of snow? Yes, this is what you get to see when you stand on the grounds of Sandakphu. With this Sandakphu trekking package, you get a chance to cross the border and enter Nepal, and meander back to India while following the winding trail.

Trekking Routes

Detailed Itinerary :

Day 01 : From NJP (New Jalpaiguri) / Bagdogra Airport to Manebhanjan/ Jaubhari

Manebhanjan is virtually the gateway to Singalila and Sandakphu. Manebhanjan is about 4-5 hours by taxi from NJP (the nearest major railway station) and also from Bagdogra (the nearest airport).

Day 02 : Manebhanjan / Jaubhari (2134m) to Tumling (3087m) 

Time Taken : 6-7 hours, 11 km

You will first climb through pristine pine forests, and after a while, you will reach a viewpoint at a good height. Stop here for a 10-minute break and look at the town of Darjeeling below. All along the hike, you will be able to see snow-covered peaks to your right or in the north. Post clicking some photos, trek down and cross two small hills. At the end of this walk, you will reach a beautiful mountainous meadow, from where the Tonglu peak of the Singalila Ridge can be seen.

The path again climbs from the meadow, and after hiking for approximately 20 minutes, you will take a diversion through the forest for Tumling. This little settlement lies on the India-Nepal border, and after you arrive here, retire for the night at your lodging.

Day 03 : Tumling (3,087m) to Kalapokhari (3,170m)

Time Taken : 6-7 hours, 11 km

Wake up early for a awesome view of the sunrise. First look at the Sleeping Buddha..

As you start your trek, notice that two motor roads converge. What you trek on is the Nepal road. Walk straight, and in some 20 minutes, reach the Singalila National Park entry point. There is  a camera fee of Rs 100 (not for mobile phones) to be paid at Singalila National Park Entry Check Post.

First look of Kangchenjunga range

Crossing Gairibas and kaiyakatta, we reach the village of Kalapokhari. There is a small lake in the area, from where the village gets its name. The waters of the pond appear black, and it is said that even in the severest of winters, it does not freeze. This belief has given the lake a mysterious aura and it is revered by locals.
On arriving here, head to your lodging and stay overnight.

Day 04 : Kalapokhari (3,170m) to Sandakphu (3,636m)

Time Taken : 3-4 hours , 6 km.

Wake up early and enjoy the sunrise at Kalaphokhari lake. Have breakfast and start moving towards our next destination Sandakphu. After climbing continuously for around 2 km, reach the place called Beekaybhanjan and stop here to take a break.
After relaxing at this tranquil spot, restart your excursion to Sandakphu peak.

Kangchenjunga range looks like Sleeping Buddha

The trail from here to Sandakphu is a steep incline of 4 km. The trail zig-zags up the hill. There are two trails. The left one goes via Nepal and is a longer trail, but the ascent is gradual. The final approach to the destination is difficult as the path keeps turning in a zigzag pattern after every 30-40 meters, and the trail is also steep.

Once you reach here, you will get a wonderful feeling and all the tiredness of the tough trek will slowly fade away. Look at the panoramic views from up here and do not forget to take photos worlds four highest peaks. If you are lucky, you can witness Sandakphu covered in snow. The temperature here dips to sub-zeroes after sunset.

Sunrise at Sandakphu

Day 05 : Sandakphu (3,636m) to Phalut (3,599m)

Time Taken : 7-8 Hours, 21 km

Wake up early in the morning and watch the sunrise over the horizon. See the snowy mountains change color from pink to orange to yellow and finally to white, and pay homage to Mother Nature. Heading towards Phalut, one of the longest route of the trek with level walks. We will also get the best views of Kangchenjunga while trekking to Phalut.

PC: Singalila Ridge Trek

Day 06 : Phalut (3,599m) to Gorkhey (2,300m)

Time Taken : 3-4 hours, 9-10 km

After enjoying the sunrise and breakfast, we will leave for Gorkhey crossing forests and decent trail. We will observe greenery throughout the journey to Gorkhey. Gorkhey a lively village where you will find two beautiful rivers passing by & agricultural fields on mountains. Gorkhey will be our last night of the trek together.

PC: Singalila Ridge Trek

Day 07 : Gorkhey (2,300m) to Sepi (1,900m)

Time taken : 4-5 hours , 15 km

After breakfast, we will for Sepi early morning. Initially there a ascent than decent till we reach Sepi. Just  before Sepi we have to cross a bridge. From the bridge to Sepi(our final destination) it is again ascent for about 30 to 45 min.

You will reach Sepi around 1 pm. Depart from Sepi. Vehicles can be arranged on demand. It takes approximately 3 hours from Sepi to reach Darjeeling and 6-7 hours to reach NJP/Bagdogra.

Exclusions :

1). Transportation from NJP/Bagdogra to NJP/Bagdogra as per group arrival/departure details. {We can arrange it for you, cost can be shared between participants traveling together.}

2). Air/Train fare
3). Anything not mentioned under the head inclusions.
4). Cost incidental to any change in the itinerary / stay on account of flight cancellation due to bad weather, ill health, road blocks and / or any factors beyond control.
5). The tariff does not include barbeque and activities.


If a trek is called off at the last moment due to a natural calamity/un forseen circumstances (like rains, earthquake, landslides, strike, bandh etc), Phoenix Expeditions will issue a trek voucher for the full amount. The voucher can be redeemed for the same trek or another trek in the next one year.

The cancellation charges are as under:

  • Cancellations prior to 30 days from the start of the trek — 75% refund.
  • Cancellation between 30 days and 20 days to the start of the trek — 50% refund.
  • Cancellation less than 20 days to the start of the trek — no refund.

By Train : Nearest Station is NJP (New Jalpaiguri). From there you can get a cab for our base camp (Manebhanjan/Jaubhari) or we can arrange for you.

By Air : Nearest airport is Bagdogra. From there you can get a cab for our base camp (Manebhanjan/Jaubhari) or we can arrange for you.
